Breakdown

RPO Alert TE Flat out of Pistol Deuce is an RPO built off inside zone action with the TE flat route as the throw key. The diagram shows the offensive line and TE blocking down for the run fit while the HB takes the zone handoff, with a second TE releasing on a flat route toward the boundary and an outside WR running a vertical route up the sideline. The QB reads the alley defender or overhang: if that defender crashes down on the run action, pull and hit the TE in the flat, and if he sits or widens with the flat route, hand off and let the zone run develop behind the double team blocking.

Defensive Reads

Watch the alignment of the slot defender or overhang linebacker before the snap, since a tight, aggressive alignment signals he is ready to jump the flat route. Post-snap, key the first step of the alley defender: if he crashes hard toward the line of scrimmage on run action, the QB will pull and throw the flat, so user that defender and stay disciplined. Man coverage on the TE flat is vulnerable if the defender bites on run action, so look for a defensive scheme with zone drops from linebackers to take away the easy throw. A Cover 3 or Cover 4 shell with a hard-flowing linebacker to the play side shuts this down, since the flat throw has nowhere to go and the run lane gets clogged. Blitzes that bring extra defenders through the play side A or B gap can beat the blocking scheme before the RPO read even develops, so watch for pre-snap blitz indicators like walked-up linebackers or safety rotation toward the box.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify the overhang or slot defender aligned over the flat route since he is the actual key for this RPO, not the deep defenders.

If the defense shows an 8 man box or a linebacker cheating into the run alley, favor pulling the ball and throwing the flat route immediately off the catch for easy yards.

Use the vertical route on the outside as a decoy to hold the corner and safety on run downs, since it rarely factors into the pre-snap read.

This play works best on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to sell out against the run look.

Pair this with RPO Read TE Flat and HB Dive from the same set to keep defenses honest, since all three plays share the same run action and force linebackers to freeze on their run fits.
