Breakdown
HB Zone Wk is an inside zone run out of Pistol Deuce with 12 personnel, weak side variant. The offensive line steps in unison toward the weak side while the fullback/TE combo seals the edge, and the HB reads the frontside gap before deciding to bend it back or press upfield. This is a pure run play designed to attack zone-based fronts and light boxes, with the primary read being the first down lineman past the center on the weak side of the play.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they are sitting shallow and flowing hard playside they are reading the zone stretch correctly. Identify safety rotation pre-snap, a single high safety cheating toward the run side signals the defense anticipates weak side zone. Post-snap, key the backside defensive end and any user-controlled defender crashing down the line, as this play is vulnerable to penetration from unblocked edge rushers. This run gets shut down by stacked fronts with 7 or 8 in the box and disciplined linebackers who stay square and read their gap instead of flowing with the line. Look for nano blitz packages off the weak side edge, since the zone blocking scheme can struggle to pick up an unaccounted rusher timed to the snap.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box for the best odds.
Use the left or right hot route on the TE to adjust the point of attack if you see the defense shading toward the weak side call.
Pair this with HB Dive and HB Counter from the same set to keep linebackers guessing on downhill run reads.
Best used on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts.
If the defense keys the run with an extra safety in the box, bail to RPO Alert TE Flat or RPO Read TE Flat from this same formation to punish the overcommit.
