HB Split Dive

Breakdown

HB Split Dive is a downhill run play out of Pistol Deuce with 12 personnel, showing a tight offensive line with both tight ends attached and the HB aligned just behind and slightly offset from the QB in the shotgun/pistol look. The blocking scheme sends the line straight ahead with double team potential at the point of attack while the HB takes a quick dive path directly through the interior gap off the mesh point. This is a pure run play with no route combos or play-action attached, designed to hit the A or B gap fast before the defense can flow, making the primary read the initial gap-to-backside cutback lane based on which way the defensive line shifts.

Defensive Reads

Watch for stacked linebackers at depth pre-snap, since a fast blitz off the edge or an A-gap blitz can blow this play up before the HB reaches the mesh point. Identify if the defense is running a 4-3 or 3-4 front with two-gapping defensive tackles, which can clog the dive lane and force a negative play. Look for safeties creeping down into the box pre-snap, a strong indicator of run support that will cap this play for minimal gain. Post-snap, key on any user-controlled defender flowing hard downhill immediately at the snap, since that shows the defense is sitting on interior run plays from this personnel grouping. This dive is most vulnerable to nano blitzes and instant A-gap shoots, so avoid calling it against defenses that have shown quick interior pressure packages.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short when the defense is not expecting a quick-hitting interior run. Check the box count before the snap: if you see six or fewer defenders in the box, this dive has a clean numbers advantage up front. Snap the ball quickly after the mesh to prevent linebackers from diagnosing and filling the dive lane. Pair this with HB Dive and HB Counter from the same Deuce set to keep linebacker flow guessing between quick hitters and misdirection. Use RPO Alert TE Flat or RPO Read TE Flat afterward in the same set to punish defenses that start crashing linebackers down to stop the dive.
