Inside Cross from Pistol Deuce (12 personnel) is a man beater built around a deep crossing route that stretches the field horizontally underneath two vertical clear-outs. Both outside receivers release vertically to occupy the deep safeties, one running a corner-breaking go route and the other bending into a deep in from the opposite side, while the inline receiver runs the shallow drag/crosser across the formation from right to left underneath the linebackers. The five offensive linemen stay in to pass protect, giving the QB a clean pocket to work through his progression, and the primary read is the crossing route first, looking to hit it in stride against man coverage before working back to the deep in-breaker if the crosser gets clogged.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safeties since one deep safety usually means man coverage, which is exactly what this play is designed to exploit. Watch linebacker depth at the snap because linebackers who sink too deep into hook zones will collide with the shallow crosser and disrupt the primary read. Key the flat defender or curl-flat player on the crosser's side, as a sqeezed window there signals the QB should climb the pocket and reset to the deep in-breaker. Diagnose blitz packages quickly since this route concept holds the ball longer to develop the crosser, making it vulnerable to A gap or edge pressure if protection is not adjusted with a chip or max protect call. Against zone shells with a deep middle robber or lurking linebacker, expect the crosser to be undercut, so be ready to reroute to the corner route on the outside vertical for the explosive shot instead.
Use this against man coverage or Cover 1 shells since the crosser creates natural separation off traffic and rubs from the formation.
Check the flat and hook defenders pre-snap because if you see two safeties deep and linebackers sitting low, the crosser can get squeezed, so be ready to move to the deep in-breaker.
Hot route the shallow crosser to a slightly deeper drag against teams that spam underneath zone drops to give it more room to work behind the second level.
Pair this with HB Dive or HB Counter out of the same Deuce Pistol look to keep defenses honest on early downs before dialing up Inside Cross on second or third and medium.
Combine with Short Post or Corner Post in your play-calling sequence to attack the same crosser/vertical shell reads while forcing the defense to guess between horizontal and vertical stress.
