Dt Mike Loop 3 is a Cover 3 zone blitz look out of the 3-3 Single Mug in Nickel that combines a line stunt with a three-deep, four-under shell. Both outside curl/flat defenders and the deep thirds drop into their zones while the interior defensive line runs a mike loop stunt, with one rusher looping wide as the other crashes the inside gap to disguise where pressure is coming from. The middle linebacker drops into a shallow hook/curl zone to wall off crossing routes, so the primary read is the defensive line stunt getting a quick win up front while the zone shell squeezes any intermediate throws underneath the deep thirds.
Defensive Reads
Watch for empty backfield or four verticals concepts, since the deep thirds can get stressed vertically if the stunt does not generate pressure in time. Key the running back release out of the backfield, because if he stays in to block the loop stunt has a better chance to win one on one. If the quarterback quickly identifies the loop and steps up in the pocket, the interior of your zone can be exposed to shallow crosses and drag routes underneath. This beats teams that rely on max protect shotgun passing since the extra gap created by the loop confuses single blockers. It struggles against quick RPOs and screen game, so if you see bubble screens or slip screens tagged, be ready to squeeze down with your underneath defenders instead of committing fully to the stunt.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or short yardage passing situations where you expect the offense to hold blockers in for protection, since the mike loop needs extra time to develop.
Pre-snap, check if the offense is in a spread empty or trips look, because the stunt can get exposed if a running back or extra blocker picks it up cleanly.
Disguise the stunt by showing a standard 3-3 mug alignment before the snap so the quarterback cannot immediately diagnose where the loop is coming from.
Pair this play with Nickel Blitz 3 or Blitz Tex 3 Sim 3 in the same set to keep the offense guessing between straight zone drops and disguised pressure looks.
Hot route the flat defenders into tighter curl zones if you expect quick game concepts, since the stunt takes an extra beat to collapse the pocket.
