3 3 Single Mug is a five-man pressure package out of the Nickel 3-3 Single Mug set that puts two mugged linebackers in the A-gaps to disguise the exact rush lane before the snap. Behind the pressure, the defense drops into a man-heavy shell with a single high safety, so this is built as a man beater designed to overload the interior of the offensive line while leaving single coverage on the outside receivers. The primary read for the defense is the offensive line's protection slide: identify which side the blockers shift to first, then time the second mugged backer to shoot the opposite open A-gap for a free rush on the quarterback.
Watch the running back's alignment pre-snap, if he stays home to block it confirms the offense expects interior pressure and the blitz is scheme sound. Read the offensive line's set point immediately after the snap, a hard slide protection to one side signals a free runner on the backside A-gap. This blitz shuts down against quick game and slot fades since man coverage on the outside can get beat on a well timed man beater route, so respect any three wide receiver bunch or stack look before committing both mugged backers. Get skinny through the gap and stay square to avoid getting picked off by a puller on inside zone or duo runs that key off the same pre-snap picture as your pressure look. Check the quarterback's eyes at the top of his drop, a fast progression to the flat or screen means the interior blitz will not get there in time and you need a spy or contain rusher instead.
Show the mugged look pre-snap and freeze the quarterback by delaying the snap count, forcing him to either check into a hot route or eat pressure he cannot identify.
Only send both mugged backers when you see a two-back or one-back protection scheme without a check-release tight end, otherwise you risk leaving the middle of the field wide open against a quick draw or screen.
Use this on third and medium to third and long when the offense is more likely to sit in a five or six man protection and let the extra rusher win with a clean lane.
Pair this with Cover 9 or Cov 3 Buzz Match on the previous snap so the offense sees a similar pre-snap picture and cannot key the blitz off alignment alone.
User the middle linebacker manually on the delayed A-gap rush to counter play-action rollouts and RPO reads, since the CPU-controlled backer can bite too fast and miss the quarterback's escape lane.
