Defensive Reads

If the offense trips receivers to one side or runs a flood concept to the flat, react fast with the near-side flat defender since that zone is stretched horizontally and vulnerable to numbers advantage. Diagnose play-action rollouts and RPOs quickly since your underneath defenders need to stay disciplined in their zone drops rather than crashing on run fakes, which offenses will exploit against this shell. Key the offense's inside receivers or tight ends releasing vertically since the seam is the most dangerous void between the flat defenders and the Mike's deep drop if his depth is late. Watch for a user-controlled receiver settling into the deep middle void behind the flat defenders but in front of the Mike, since a well timed dig or deep in route can split the coverage before the Mike fully gets over the top.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or obvious passing situations where you expect the offense to attack vertically, since the Mike linebacker's deep middle drop closes the traditional Cover 2 hole shot.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is showing a stack or bunch to one side, then check the Mike's spy alignment to confirm he can reach the deep middle before the snap.
Hot route the flat defenders into shallow drag or spy responsibilities if you diagnose quick game or RPO tendencies, since the base flats can be attacked with speed in space before the zone sets.
