Breakdown

Cover 4 Quarters out of Dime Load Weak is a four deep, three under zone shell built to take away vertical shots from a Dime 4-1-6 personnel grouping. The diagram shows both outside corners and both safeties pedaling straight down into deep quarters landmarks, the two X defenders (slot corners) sitting as underneath curl/flat zone defenders, and the single MLB dropping straight downfield into a middle hole/seam zone. This is a pure zone beater defense, not a blitz package, so there is no pass rush design here beyond the standard four man rush; the primary read progression for the defense is deep to underneath, meaning the safeties and corners must first eliminate any vertical route before the underneath zone defenders squeeze in on shorter combination routes.

Defensive Reads

Watch for two receiver vertical stems on the same side pre-snap, since Cover 4 is built to have two defenders capable of squeezing any true two man vertical combo. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop; if he sits shallow in the middle hole he can be exploited by a deep crosser, so be ready to user him into a deeper zone against stack or bunch formations. This shell is vulnerable to quick game and RPO throws underneath since only three defenders play underneath zones in a 4-1-6 look, so expect hitches, quick outs, and slants to be the first answer from a smart offense. It shuts down four verticals and deep post/corner combinations because every deep route runs into a dedicated quarter defender, making it a strong counter to Ace or Gun empty vertical stretch concepts. Look for run support numbers before the snap; with only one true linebacker in the box, this call is susceptible to inside zone and gap runs if the offense shows base personnel, so consider audibling to a run friendly front on early downs.

Usage Tips

Use this call on early downs or third and long when you expect the offense to test the deep middle or attack the sidelines vertically.

Pre-snap, identify if the offense is aligned to isolate a single receiver on one of your deep quarter defenders, since Cover 4 leaves each deep defender responsible for only one quarter of the field.

Hot route the two flat/curl defenders (the X icons) into a slightly deeper zone if you are worried about deep in cuts settling behind the linebacker level.

Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 2 Drop from the same set so your pre-snap shell disguise stays consistent while you rotate coverage types, keeping quarterbacks guessing between three deep and four deep looks.

Sequence this play after a DB Blitz call to condition the offense to expect pressure, then drop into this zone shell to bait a hot throw into a sitting underneath defender.
