Cover 4 Palms is a zone defense out of the Dime Load Weak set that shows four deep quarter defenders with two flat corners and a pair of underneath robber defenders sinking to the middle hook zones. The corners squat on the outside receivers to jump quick game and smash concepts while the safeties read the number two receiver to trigger a pattern match rule against verticals. This is a zone defense designed to beat both man and zone concepts, and it plays especially well against smash, sail and vertical stem combos from trips or slot alignments.
Defensive Reads
Watch the number two receiver at the snap, if he releases vertically the safety carries him while the corner sinks under any out breaking route This coverage is vulnerable to quick slants and shallow drag combos that attack the seam between the flat defender and the hook robber Look for offenses running four verticals or a dagger concept, Palms rules can get stressed if both inside receivers push vertical at the same depth Pre snap, check corner depth, if they are playing off and squatty that usually confirms Palms rules rather than true quarters Post snap, track the outside linebacker or slot defender's landmark, late sink into the hook zone signals the underneath robber is ready to rally on any curl or comeback route
Usage Tips
Bait the quarterback with a two high shell pre snap since the safeties will widen late to their quarter zones once the ball is snapped
Use the flat defenders as your first key, if they squat hard on the corner routes it signals Palms rules are triggering against a two receiver side
Combine this with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 2 Drop in your play calling sequence so the offense cannot key on your safety depth pre snap
User the outside corner on early downs to bait a quick out or hitch throw, then rip under it for the jump and pick
Call this on third and medium when you expect a smash concept or a flood route since the corner reroute plus safety help erases the deep out throwing lane
