Cover 1 Robber Press is a man coverage defensive play out of the Dime Load Weak set, built to lock down five eligible receivers with press man technique at the line. The diagram shows press corners jamming outside, a robber defender sitting underneath in the middle of the field to rob crossing routes and shallow drags, and a deep single-high safety over the top providing help against verticals. Four defenders are shown blitzing off the edges and interior, meaning the box is stressed with a five-man rush while the back seven plays true man with a rat in the hole, making this a man beater killer that also disguises pressure against RPOs and quick game.
Pre-snap, check safety depth: if the single-high safety is shaded to the boundary side, expect the quarterback to attack the field side against press corners with double moves. Watch receiver splits and stacks, since bunch formations are designed to rub man defenders and the robber needs to stay patient and not bite on the first crosser. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes for any hitch to the middle of the field, that is when the robber should break on shallow crossers or square-in routes. This coverage is vulnerable to well-timed rub routes and pick concepts that beat press corners at the release point, so watch for stacked receivers running mesh at the snap. Cover 1 Robber Press gets exposed against quick game and hot route sight adjustments if the offensive line picks up the blitz cleanly, so user the robber or a spy defender to close throwing lanes if the rush does not get home in three seconds.
Call this play on obvious passing downs like 3rd and long when you expect the offense to run vertical or crossing man beater concepts. Identify pre-snap if the offense is in a bunch or stack formation, since the robber can rob mesh and drag combos that usually give man coverage trouble. Use the robber defender as a spy on shifty scrambling quarterbacks or as a rat in the hole to jump slants and dig routes on the first read. Pair this with Cover 2 Man or DB Blitz 1 in the same set so quarterbacks cannot key press alignment alone and have to hesitate on their first read. Bring the extra rusher with a manual blitz on the weak side linebacker if you need to speed up the quarterback's internal clock against empty or trips formations.
