Breakdown

SS Blitz 3 is a Cover 3 zone blitz out of the 4-3 Over Walk set that brings the strong safety off the edge while dropping the underneath defenders into a three deep, four under shell. The diagram shows both cornerbacks and the strong safety carrying deep thirds, three underneath defenders spilling into hook and flat zones, and four rushers (three down linemen plus the blitzing safety) attacking the pocket off the arrows. This is a zone blitz designed to disguise pressure while still playing sound zone coverage behind it, not a man beater, so the primary read for the quarterback facing it is working from the flat to the hook zone since the extra rusher forces hot throws before the deep thirds fully develop.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the strong safety depth and shade since a walked down alignment near the line signals the blitz is live and you should expect hot throws. Post-snap, user the strongest underneath defender to rob the intermediate hook zone since that is the primary void created by the extra rusher. This beats offenses that rely on five and seven step drops because the added rusher collapses the pocket before deep routes develop. It struggles against quick game and hitches to the flat, so if the offense audibles into three step drops be ready to squeeze the flat defender's zone. Watch for running backs releasing into the vacated strong side flat since the blitzing safety leaves that area thin if the underneath zone drops are too slow.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and medium when you want to disguise pressure without fully committing to man coverage behind it.

Walk the strong safety down late in the play clock to hide the blitz and bait the quarterback into thinking it is a standard Cover 3 shell.

Use hot route adjustments on the underneath defenders to widen or tighten the flat zones depending on whether the offense is running quick game or shows a bunch formation.

Pair this with Cover 3 Sky and Cover 3 Cloud from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key the strong safety blitz off pre-snap alignment alone.

Mix in Will Blitz 3 as a companion call since both disguise as the same shell but bring pressure from different levels, keeping the offense guessing on protection assignments.
