Corner Blitz 3 is a Cover 3 zone blitz out of the Over Walk 4-3 Base package that sends a cornerback off the edge while dropping the underneath defenders into a three deep, four under shell. The blitzing corner attacks the edge as a fifth or sixth rusher depending on your pre-snap adjustments, while the remaining three deep defenders split the field into thirds and the underneath zone defenders wall off the shallow to intermediate crossers. This is a zone beater blitz designed to disrupt quick game timing, and your primary read is the running back or nearest hot route out of the backfield since the offense will often check into a quick throw to beat the extra rusher off the edge.
Defensive Reads
Read the quarterback's eyes immediately after the snap since most offenses will try to get the ball out fast to the flat or to a slot receiver to punish the extra rusher. Watch for empty backfield or spread formations that leave no one to chip the blitzing corner, which turns this into a near automatic pressure look. If the offense motions a receiver into the boundary where the corner is blitzing from, expect a hot route adjustment such as a quick out or bubble screen to attack the vacated space. Post snap, keep an eye on the deep middle safety rotation since busted zone drops here can leave a seam or deep out route open behind the blitzing corner. Against heavy run formations or run-heavy tendencies, this call can get gashed on the perimeter since the blitzing corner removes an edge run defender, so respect play action rollouts and outside zone runs that attack the same side.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or third and medium when the offense is likely to sit in a standard drop back concept rather than max protect.
Check the pre-snap formation for trips or bunch sets away from the blitzing corner since those alignments create natural picks that neutralize the edge pressure.
User the blitzing corner yourself if you have confidence in your rush moves so you can control the win versus a chip block from the tight end or running back.
Disguise this call by mixing it in after running Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Cloud from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key the corner blitz from formation alone.
If the offense starts checking to hot routes or slants away from the blitz side, alternate with Sam Will Blitz or Mike Will Blitz to keep interior gaps guessed at differently.
