Cover 3 Sky is a three deep, four under zone coverage out of the Over Walk 4-3 set, and this is a defensive play, not an offensive scheme. The diagram shows the two outside cornerbacks and the free safety dropping into deep thirds while the strong safety rotates down into the box as the extra run and flat defender, giving the "Sky" tag its name. Underneath, the four defenders (both linebackers and the nickel/Will) spread into flat and hook zones with soft drops, forming a classic zone beater killer against quick game and shallow crossers. The primary read progression for the defense is: identify run fits first with the Sky safety, then work the underneath flat defenders to the curl to flat combos before trusting the deep thirds corners on verticals.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since the strong safety walking down toward the line signals the Sky rotation and tips run support to the strength. Post-snap, key the flat defenders first since Cover 3 Sky is vulnerable to quick hitches and speed outs if the underneath zone drops are too deep. Watch for offenses attacking the seams between the deep third corners and the rotated safety, especially with deep crossers and skinny posts that split the zone. This shell beats most man beater route combos and mesh concepts thanks to the extra underneath defender, but it can be exposed by four verticals if the free safety bites on play action. Look for user controlled slot receivers or tight ends sitting in the hook zone soft spot, since that is the primary void Cover 3 Sky leaves for the offense to exploit.
Call this on early downs or second and medium when you expect play action or a run heavy personnel package since the Sky safety adds a run defender to the box.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is aligned in a stack or bunch to the strength side since the rotated safety must account for both run support and flat coverage help.
Use this in a package with Cover 3 Cloud so you can disguise whether the corner or safety is rotating down, keeping the quarterback guessing on which underneath defender has flat responsibility.
User the strong safety at the snap to squeeze curl to flat throws and jump underneath crossers, since the CPU AI in the Sky rotation can be late getting under quick outs.
Sequence this with Fire Zone 2 or SS Blitz 3 from the same Over Walk set to keep the same pre-snap look while disguising zone versus pressure calls.
