Breakdown

Cover 3 Sky KO is a zone coverage defensive play out of the 4-3 Over Walk set that rolls the strong safety down into the box to support the run while dropping the free safety and one corner into deep thirds. The Sky variant kicks out the underneath flat responsibility to the strong safety, giving you an extra hat near the line of scrimmage against runs and quick game while still maintaining three deep defenders over the top. This is a zone beater killer against slot fades and flat routes since the strong safety sinks under the flat, and your primary post-snap read is the number two receiver to the strong side: if he releases vertical you sink your curl to flat defender under him, if he runs shallow you squeeze the throwing lane and let the deep third corner handle anything over the top.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the offense has a tight end or extra receiver to the strong side, since that dictates whether the strong safety needs to be ready for flat responsibility or extra run fits. Watch the free safety depth at the snap, if he is shaded to the weak side hash you know this call is rotating away from a strong side overload and you need to jump routes quickly with the corner. This coverage shuts down quick hitters, flat routes, and shallow crosses to the strong side because of the sky rotation, but it can be exposed by deep out routes and corner routes if the strong safety bites too hard on shorter routes. Post-snap, key the number two receiver's release, a vertical stem forces your curl to flat player to widen and account for seam shots between the hash and the numbers. Beware of play action rollouts to the strong side, since the strong safety is often the primary run fit defender and can be frozen by a hard fake before recovering to cover the flat.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or short yardage situations where you expect run or quick game to the strong side since the strong safety is walked down for extra run support.

Check pre-snap for a bunch or stack strong side, if the offense is running twin verticals or a smash concept the flat defender needs to widen immediately at the snap to avoid getting picked.

User the strong safety and jump the first crossing route or flat route you see, this is your lurk defender and the key to jumping quick hitters and shallow drags.

Pair this call with Cover 3 Cloud or Cover 3 Match in the same set to disguise your coverage shell, since all three show the same shell pre-snap but rotate the flat and hole defenders differently.

Avoid calling this against heavy four verticals looks or trips formations to the weak side, since the single high safety can get stressed if the strong safety bites too hard on run action.
