Breakdown

Cover 4 Quarters out of the 4-3 Over Walk set is a four deep, three under zone shell built to take away the pass while staying sound versus play-action and RPO looks. The diagram shows both cornerbacks and both safeties dropping into deep quarter zones with vertical spacing across the field, while the three second level defenders sink into underneath zones with the middle linebacker area covered by the olive zone in the middle of the field. This is a zone beater killer and works as a base defensive call rather than an offensive play, so the primary read progression for the defense is to identify the deepest route in each quarter first, then work down to underneath crossers and flood concepts as routes develop.

Defensive Reads

Key the number two receiver to the strength side, if he releases vertically that safety must widen and stay on top instead of sinking on any underneath crosser. Watch for the flat defenders sitting too shallow on smash concepts, corner routes into the deep quarters can be undercut if the corner reads the flat action too early. This shell shuts down four verticals and dagger concepts because of the natural deep quarter integrity, but it is vulnerable to double moves on the outside if your corners bite hard on the initial break. Look for user lurks sitting in the shallow crossing lanes since the underneath zone defenders can jump in-cuts if they read quarterback eyes quickly. Watch the offensive line splits and running back alignment pre-snap, since this call is a zone shell and can be attacked with inside runs if linebackers flow too far outside their zone drops.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or any distance where you expect a balanced play call from the offense since it defends both run and pass equally well. Check the offensive formation pre-snap for stacked or bunch sets that can create natural picks on your outside corners in their deep quarter zones. Use pre-snap adjustments to widen your safeties if you see verticals from twin receiver sets attacking the seams. Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Cloud in your play-calling sequence so quarters and Cover 3 look identical pre-snap but rotate differently, keeping the user guessing on which defender is playing the deep half. Sub in Fire Zone 2 on third and long after showing Cover 4 a few times to disguise pressure while keeping the same shell look.
