FS Blitz is a defensive play out of the 4-3 Over Solid set that sends the free safety off the edge as a fifth rusher while dropping into a one high shell behind him. The diagram shows four down linemen crashing forward with the FS blitzing off the weak side, a single deep defender covering the entire middle of the field, and underneath defenders spread to the flats and hook zones. This is a zone based blitz designed to disguise pressure while still playing zone coverage behind it, making it a scheme fit against teams that struggle with hot route identification under pressure.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check if the offense has a running back staying in to block, since that indicates they anticipate extra pressure and may have a built in hot route beater. Watch for trips or bunch formations that can put a receiver in the same gap as the blitzing free safety, which can nullify the pressure before it develops. This play beats quick game concepts and shallow crossers because the underneath zone defenders squeeze passing lanes while the free safety disrupts the quarterback's timing. It struggles against play-action rollouts and RPOs that read the safety blitz, since the vacated deep middle becomes a shot play window for a post or deep dig. Post-snap, key the running back's release, if he chips or picks up the blitzing safety, transition your eyes immediately to the deep middle since your only high safety help is now stretched thin.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or third and medium when offenses expect a standard four man rush and are less likely to check into a hot route beating the extra rusher.
Disguise the FS blitz by rotating your safety late so the quarterback cannot get a clean pre-snap read on the one high shell.
User the free safety on the blitz to time the snap count and get a clean rush lane, since a whiffed blitz leaves the deep middle vulnerable with only zone defenders left behind.
Pair this play with Cover 3 Sky WK or Cover 1 Sting in your play-calling sequence so the offense sees similar single high safety looks and cannot key blitz versus coverage based on pre-snap alignment.
Avoid calling this against empty formations or spread sets where the free safety has a long run lane to the quarterback, since the extra time allows blockers to pick him up.
