Defensive Reads
Watch the safety alignment pre-snap, if both safeties are showing deep with a two high shell, the offense may not suspect the extra deep middle help from the Mike linebacker. Post-snap, key the Mike linebacker's drop angle, if he gets sucked up by a play-action fake or shallow crosser, the deep middle void reopens and becomes an easy throwing lane for the quarterback. This shell shuts down four verticals, deep post routes, and any concept trying to attack the deep middle third since the extra defender clogs that throwing lane that regular Cover 2 leaves exposed. It is vulnerable to hard out routes and deep comebacks toward the sideline since the corners are reading number one vertical and can be beaten if they bite on double moves. Watch for user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow to intermediate crossing lanes, since aggressive players will often jump curl or drag routes trying to bait a quick throw into a phantom window.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or second and medium situations when you want to bait the offense into thinking a standard Cover 2 hole shot is open over the middle.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running a bunch or stack formation designed to pick the underneath linebackers, since Tampa 2 leans heavily on the Mike getting a clean drop.
User the Mike linebacker immediately after the snap to close any deep middle window before the quarterback can climb the pocket and throw the seam or post.
Mix this play into a sequence with Cover 2 Invert and Cover 3 Hard Flat from the same Over Solid set so opposing quarterbacks cannot key on flat defender depth or deep middle help based on formation alone.
Avoid calling this against heavy run personnel since the underneath zone drops can be slow to react to gap runs, making it vulnerable on early down power runs.
