PA Boot Slide is a play-action pass out of Weak I with 21 personnel that shows run action before the QB boots to the right edge on a rollout. The route concept features a deep corner route from the backside, a dig sitting underneath in the middle of the field, a vertical wheel/flag combo from the slot, and a flat/slide route running underneath from the fullback that acts as the outlet valve. This is a play-action man beater designed to attack overaggressive linebackers and safeties who bite on the run fake, with the primary read progression going from the deep corner route on the boot side down to the underneath dig, and finally to the checkdown slide route if both are covered.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage defenses struggle with this concept because the wheel route from the slot creates a natural pick opportunity against man defenders trailing underneath routes. Watch for a defense that keeps two safeties deep post-snap, since that indicates they are respecting the play-action and will erase the corner route window. If the play-side outside linebacker or slot corner sinks hard into a zone drop instead of stepping up on the run fake, expect the underneath dig to be the answer versus that zone shell. Look for a user-controlled defender flowing hard downhill on the fake, which opens the deep corner route behind him but also signals a potential contain rusher crashing the boot side. Blitz packages that send extra rushers from the play-action side can beat this quickly, so if you see edge pressure showing pre-snap on that side, be ready to get the ball out fast to the slide route or consider audibling to a quicker-hitting play like Mesh instead.
Usage Tips
Run this out of Weak I on early downs like first or second and short to sell the run action off HB Dive and Inside Zone Split in the same set. Check the safety depth before the snap. If you see a single high safety cheating toward the boot side, throw off the fake immediately to the deep corner route since the linebackers will be occupied by run fits. Hot route the slide route to a flat or drag if you diagnose zone coverage sitting underneath, since the naked boot action gives the QB extra time to read the field. Pair this with Mesh and PA Flood in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot key on run action versus pass tendencies out of the same formation. Use the rollout to buy time against blitz-heavy defenses since the boot naturally gets the QB outside the pocket and away from interior pressure.
