HB Dive out of Weak I Slot Close is a straight downhill run play that hits the interior of the defense between the guards. The blocking scheme shows the fullback leading through the hole while the offensive line down blocks to seal the point of attack, giving the HB a north south crease to attack immediately after the handoff. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO element, designed to punish light boxes and win with physicality rather than misdirection. The primary read progression is simple: identify the initial crease off the fullback's lead block, then work off the down blocks to find the first open running lane before defenders flow to the ball.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check if the middle linebacker is stacked tight to the line, since a crowded box is the biggest indicator this play gets stuffed. Watch for a nano blitz look from the defensive line or edge defenders crashing hard inside, which can beat the down blocks before the fullback gets to the hole. Post-snap, key the fullback's block target, if a user controlled linebacker sheds and fills the lead block's gap immediately, the play has almost no answer and gets blown up. This play struggles against goal line or heavy run commit defenses with extra defenders stacked in the box, but it beats light zone shells and single high safety looks that leave only six in the box. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with safeties rotated back pre-snap, that usually signals a lighter box, which is the ideal trigger to call HB Dive.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre-snap and look for a light box with six or fewer defenders before calling this play, since HB Dive struggles against stacked eight man fronts.
Use this play early in a series to establish downhill run tempo and set up your play-action rollouts like PA Boot Slide or PA Flood later in the drive.
On the stick, trust your fullback's lead block and stay patient rather than juking immediately, letting the down blocks develop before committing to a lane.
This play shines on short yardage and 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1 situations where defenses are forced to respect the run and cannot sit back in deep zone shells.
Mix HB Dive with Inside Zone Split in the same set to keep linebackers guessing between a gap scheme and a zone scheme, since both hit similar landmarks but require different linebacker fits.
