Inside Zone Split is a base zone run play out of Weak I with a Slot Close 21 personnel look, showing two receivers stacked wide left with no route action drawn and the offensive line executing a zone blocking track to the right. The fullback and blocking back lead through the hole while the running back reads the zone flow and picks a crease based on the defensive front. This is a run play, not a pass concept, and the primary read progression is the frontside combo block at the point of attack, with the back reading playside gaps first before working backside if the frontside is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth and alignment before the snap, if the linebackers are sitting shallow and crashing downhill this play struggles unless the offensive line wins the initial double team. Key the defensive tackle alignment inside, a shaded nose or 3 technique that slants hard into the zone track can blow up the play design if not accounted for. Look for safety rotation into the box pre-snap, an eight man front or a safety cheating down signals the defense is loading up to stop inside zone runs. Post-snap, track user controlled linebackers flowing to the play side gap, if the user overcommits early the cutback lane opens up for the running back. This run beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts that respect outside receivers and slow flowing zone linebackers, but it gets shut down by stacked fronts, heavy blitz packages, and aggressive gap shooting defensive tackles that disrupt the zone track before it develops.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage situations where you want to stay balanced and keep defenses honest. Check the defensive front pre-snap, if you see light boxes with six or fewer in the box this play hits hard against base fronts and zone shells that respect the two split receivers. Motion the fullback or adjust blocking assignments if you see an overloaded front to help seal an extra defender at the point of attack. Pair this with HB Dive from the same set to keep defenses guessing between a quick hitting dive and this developing zone track, and set up PA Boot Slide or PA Flood off the same look once the defense starts crashing down hard on early down runs. Avoid calling this into heavy blitz packages with stacked fronts unless you have a hot route ready to adjust blocking, since gap integrity issues will cut off the cutback lane.
