HB Stretch Alert Bubble is an outside zone run play out of Strong I Slot with a pre-snap alert that hot routes the outside receiver into a bubble screen. The diagram shows the offensive line flowing laterally with the HB stretching to the play side, while the alerted receiver runs a shallow bubble route as a built-in check against overloaded box counts. This is a run play with a screen alert attached, not a true RPO since the read is made pre-snap rather than post-snap. The primary progression is a pre-snap decision: alert the bubble if the defense stacks the box with extra defenders, otherwise let the stretch run develop and read the zone blocking flow from playside to backside.
Defensive Reads
Watch the slot defender pre-snap, if he crashes down into the box or shows blitz, that is your trigger to alert the bubble screen for an easy outside gain. Stacked boxes with eight or nine defenders and safeties creeping into run support are a green light for the bubble alert rather than handing off into a loaded front. On the stretch run, key the flow of the defensive line and linebackers, if they overpursue playside, the cutback lane on the backside will open up. Defenses that stay disciplined with outside cornerbacks sitting on bubble routes and keep linebackers in gap control will shut down both the alert and the base run. Beware of user-controlled defenders spying the bubble route from depth, a smart defender can jump the screen if the alert is used too predictably on the same down and distance.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front before the snap and count defenders in the box, if the count favors the defense, use the alert to bubble the ball outside for a numbers advantage.
Bubble alert works best against aggressive run blitzes and overshifted fronts where the slot corner or nickel is playing tight to the line with no help outside.
On the stretch run itself, stay patient and let the HB press the line of scrimmage before cutting, outside zone blocking needs a beat to develop the cutback lane.
