HB Stretch out of Strong I Slot 21 personnel is an outside zone run play designed to get the HB moving laterally before deciding whether to bounce, bang, or bend the run. The diagram shows the full offensive line flowing hard to the play side (right) with the FB and blocking assets pulling in tandem to seal the edge, while the two split receivers stay uninvolved as pure decoys with vertical releases up the numbers. The HB takes the handoff on a lateral track behind the zone-blocking front, reading the flow from the playside tackle and TE first before working backside if the edge gets sealed.
Key the playside linebacker depth before the snap, since shallow-aligned backers who crash hard will get sealed easily by the zone-blocking scheme shown in the diagram. Watch for a user-controlled defensive end or edge defender staying home instead of following blockers, as this is the primary defender who kills the bounce lane. If the safety rotates down into the box pre-snap, that is a run-support cue and the offense should expect a lurking defender ready to fill the cutback lane. Zone coverage shells with linebackers sitting flat-footed in their drops get gashed by this play since nobody is filling gaps quickly enough to stop the stretch. Man coverage on the two split receivers frees up extra defenders in the box, so watch for an eighth man crashing down as the run fits tighten against this personnel.
Run this out of a run-heavy personnel look on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) to keep defenses honest against your play-action shots in this set like PA Post Shot or PA Boot Slide.
Pre-snap, check for defenders stacked outside the tackle box or a walked-up slot corner, since that alignment can clog the stretch lane before the ball is even snapped.
If the defense shows a heavy box with 8 or more in the tackle area, consider hot routing one of the split receivers into a quick out or bubble to force a defender out of the box.
Use this play in sequence with HB Toss and HB Power O to keep linebackers guessing on flow direction, since all three plays start with similar lateral action but hit different gaps.
Against fast-flowing linebackers who key the mesh point, mix in HB Draw from this same personnel to punish overpursuit.
