Inside Zone Wk is a run play out of the Strong I Slot formation with 21 personnel, giving you two backs and a tight end for extra blocking surfaces. The diagram shows the fullback leading through the hole with the HB taking a weak side zone track, reading the frontside combo blocks from the offensive line as they climb to the second level. This is a pure zone run play with no play-action or RPO element attached, and the primary read progression is backside cutback lane first, then bounce weak if the playside gap gets clogged by flowing linebackers.
Defensive Reads
Play a 4-3 or 3-4 base front with linebackers at normal depth to keep run fits sound against this concept. Watch for the fullback lead block as your key, user your MLB to attack the FB in the hole and force the HB to redirect. If offense shows Strong I personnel, anticipate run tendency and consider a run blitz or crashing the playside DE to blow up the zone scheme before it develops. Zone coverage shells with linebackers sitting in shallow drops get gashed by this play since nobody is filling the inside gaps quickly, so stack the box against 21 personnel. Beware of overcommitting your safety to run support pre-snap since this formation can also fake into play-action shots off similar run action.
Usage Tips
Run this out of Strong I Slot on early downs to keep defenses honest and set up your play-action shots later in the drive.
Check the box count pre-snap and if you see 7 or more defenders stacked in the box, consider audibling to HB Toss or HB Stretch instead to get outside the numbers.
Use the FB as your lead blocker key, if the defense shows a heavy blitz look with linebackers crashing downhill, this play can hit fast through the vacated inside lane.
Pair this with PA Power O and PA Boot Slide later in the series since the run action looks identical at the snap and forces linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
On second and short, this is a low risk call that punishes teams sitting in nickel or dime packages with light boxes.
