Defensive Reads

Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the backfield or sitting in a shallow zone underneath, as that defender can read the screen and jump the throwing lane. Key on defensive ends and tackles crashing hard upfield off the snap, this is exactly the pursuit angle that lets the HB slip outside for a big gain. Against a two-high shell with disciplined linebackers staying home, the screen has nowhere to go and the offense should check to another play. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 1 with man corners locked on the vertical routes, the flat area behind the line should stay open for the HB catch and turn upfield.

Use it on early downs after establishing a few standard dropback passes so the defense is primed to bring extra rushers. Let the offensive line get to their landmarks before throwing, patience is key since throwing too early into the backfield gets the HB hit before blockers are set. Pair this with Inside Zone Wk or HB Draw earlier in a series so the defense respects the run fake and commits linebackers downhill, making the screen even more effective. Avoid calling this against zone-heavy shells that keep linebackers at home, since spy defenders or a disciplined Mike linebacker can sit on the screen and blow it up for a loss.
