Dagger out of Strong I Slot 21 personnel shows the classic two-level clear out concept on the boundary side paired with an intermediate crossing route. The outside receiver runs a vertical seam that clears out the deep zone while the slot receiver sits down on a deep dig sitting behind that clear out, and the TE or slot runs a crossing route underneath from the opposite side to hold linebackers. This is primarily a man and Cover 3 beater since the vertical stresses deep zone defenders while the dig settles into the vacated middle void, and the blocking is standard drop back protection with no play-action or screen elements shown. Primary read progression is the deep dig off the clear out first, then check down to the crossing route underneath if the middle is jumped.
Pre-snap, identify single high safety alignment since that tells you Dagger is live and the dig should have room behind the vertical clear out. Watch the slot cornerback depth at the snap, if he sinks with the vertical route the dig window opens immediately for the quarterback. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker drop, if he flies out to cover the underneath crosser the dig sits wide open in the vacated zone. User controlled defenders sitting in a deep middle lurk can jump the dig route, so watch for a defender staying home in the middle third instead of biting on the vertical. Cover 2 with hard flat corners and two deep safeties squeezes the throwing window for the dig, forcing the check down to the underneath crossing route.
Look for single high safety shells pre-snap since Dagger thrives when the deep vertical occupies the free safety and opens the dig behind him.
Hot route the underneath crosser into a flat route against Cover 2 to give yourself a quicker outlet if the corners sit on the dig.
Use this on second and medium to second and long when defenses expect a run out of Strong I personnel, since the run heavy formation disguises the pass intent.
Pair Dagger with HB Stretch or Inside Zone Wk earlier in a series so linebackers bite up on run fits, then come back to Dagger to hit the dig behind a flowing defense.
Against zone blitz looks, get the ball out to the shallow crosser quickly since the dig read takes longer to develop and can get sacked on delayed pressure.
