HB Power O out of the Strong I Slot set is a gap-scheme run play built to overload the strong side with a lead blocker and a pulling guard. The diagram shows the fullback and offside guard pulling across the formation to kick out the edge defender and lead through the hole, while the offensive line down blocks to seal backside penetration, creating a natural running lane between the tackle and tight end. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read for the HB is to press the mesh point behind the pullers, read the fullback's kick out block on the edge defender, and cut off the puller's block path based on how the defense flows.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a stacked box pre-snap, if the defense has an extra linebacker or safety crashed down near the line they are likely selling out to stop this exact concept. Check the edge defender's alignment, a wide 9-technique or a defensive end crashing hard inside can blow up the fullback's kick out block and force a negative play. Look for linebackers keying the pulling guard, a user-controlled linebacker who fills the hole quickly and stays square is reading the pull and will meet the ball carrier at the line. Man coverage on the backside usually means fewer eyes in the box, favoring the run, while zone shells with linebackers sitting flat against play action suggest the defense is guessing run first. A quick blitz off the edge before the pullers arrive is the biggest counter, if you see a defensive end or outside linebacker crash unblocked immediately, cut this to a cutback lane behind the backside guard.
Usage Tips
Run this out of 21 personnel on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to keep defenses honest against your play-action shots in the same set.
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box you want to bounce this outside off the puller instead of forcing it inside.
Use the fullback's block as your visual key, if he gets immediate leverage on the edge defender stick to the called hole, if he gets stood up bounce it wide.
Pair this with PA Power O and PA Lead Draw Shot from the same set so the linebackers have to respect the run fake before you hit them with a shot play off identical action.
Against aggressive user blitzers, motion into this look or use a hard count to draw penetration and let the naturally aggressive gap flow work against them.
