Fake Spike 2

Special·Stop Clock·Personnel not specified

Breakdown

Fake Spike 2 is a trick play out of the Special formation designed to freeze the defense into thinking the offense is killing the clock. Instead of spiking the ball, the QB pumps the spike motion and looks downfield off a delayed release from an eligible receiver who slips into a soft area of the defense. This is not a traditional man or zone beater in the route-tree sense, it is a clock-management trap play whose primary read is simply whether the defense bites on the spike fake and vacates coverage discipline, giving the QB a free look at whoever comes open first.

Defensive Reads

Watch the offensive personnel stay on the field without a hurry up substitution, this is a tell that a real spike may not be coming Key the QB's cadence and hand mechanics at the line, a genuine spike has a distinct quick snap and immediate downward motion If defenders relax or turn to the sideline anticipating a clock stop, this play will gash you immediately Stay in your assigned zone drops or man coverage responsibilities regardless of what the offense shows pre snap User controlled defenders should stay locked on the most dangerous release instead of peeking at the sideline or officials

Usage Tips

Only call this play when your opponent has shown a tendency to relax or substitute defenders after seeing a spike animation start in previous drives

Use it in two minute drill or end of half situations where the defense expects a legitimate spike to stop the clock

Watch for defenders jogging or turning toward the sideline pre snap, this is your green light that the fake will hit

Mix this into a sequence with Fake Spike, Fake Spike 3, and Spike Ball so opponents cannot pattern recognize when the real spike is coming versus the trick

Call this on 2nd or 3rd down near the end of half when the defense has no reason to suspect anything but a clock stoppage
