Breakdown

PA Y-Cross out of Singleback Wing Flex 12 personnel sells the play-action fake to the backfield before the Y (tight end) works a deep crossing route from one side of the formation all the way across the field. The blocking scheme mimics an inside run look with the offensive line stepping into run fits to hold linebackers and freeze the second level, buying time for the crosser to clear traffic. This is a play-action man beater at its core since the crosser creates natural separation against man defenders, but it also stresses zone defenses that are slow to sink or rotate, making the primary read the Y-Cross first, then working outside to the flat or comeback route as a checkdown against a hard sink.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify two high shells versus single high, two high safeties give the crosser a bigger window before help arrives Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake the crossing route will have a wide open throwing lane Post-snap, track any user controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field since that player can jump the crossing route if the quarterback holds it too long Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets beaten badly by the natural rub and separation from the crossing route Cover 3 or Cover 4 with disciplined zone drops and a robber underneath can sit on the crosser and bait an interception if the quarterback does not check off to the flat

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like first or second and short to keep linebackers honest against the run fake before hitting them with the deep crosser

Check safety depth pre-snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep the crosser has room to work underneath before the shell rotates

Against single high looks, hot route the backside receiver into a vertical or dig to occupy the free safety and open up the crossing lane

If the linebackers are showing blitz or sit at the line pre-snap, expect a nano blitz look and get the ball out fast to the flat option instead of holding for the crosser

Pair this with HB Toss Strong or 0 1 Trap earlier in a sequence so the defense keys run action, then punish the aggressive linebacker flow with the play-action cross
