HB Zone Wk is a zone run play out of Singleback Wing Flex that sends the halfback toward the weak side of the formation behind a zone blocking scheme. The offensive line executes zone steps, flowing weak side and combo blocking down linemen before climbing to the second level, giving the runner a natural cutback lane if the initial alley clogs up. This is a run play with a one cut design, so the primary read progression is playside cutback lane first, then bounce outside if the backside linebacker overpursues, then cutback lane behind the center if the defensive front squeezes hard.
Pre-snap, identify the strong safety and weak side linebacker depth since a stacked box or a linebacker cheating weak side signals the defense has scouted the zone run tendency. Look for a nine technique or wide 5 alignment from the weak side defensive end, which can clog the cutback lane and force the back to bounce outside into a numbers disadvantage. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker flow: if he reads zone quickly and flows hard, the back needs to cut it back immediately behind the zone blocking before the backside pursuit closes the window. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the mesh point or crashing the A gap, since a well timed user blitz through the weak side gap can blow this play up before the line gets zone movement started. Against a defense showing an overloaded weak side front with both the defensive tackle and end shaded weak, bail on this play call and lean on Counter Weak or HB Toss Strong instead to attack the vacated strong side.
Run this out of 12 personnel to bait base or nickel fronts into thinking pass with the two tight end look before snapping it into a zone run. Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle to tackle area, since a heavy box means the numbers are not in your favor. Use the left or right trigger to manually control the halfback through the mesh point on this weak side zone so you can freelance the cutback lane instead of letting the CPU logic bounce it too early. Pair this with Counter Weak in the same set so the defense has to respect both a weak side zone track and a strong side pulling counter look, which slows down linebacker flow. Best used on early downs, first and ten or second and short, when you want to stay ahead of the sticks and set up PA Y-Cross or PA Fl Dive off similar backfield action later in the drive. Against aggressive user defenders flying downhill, hit the cutback immediately rather than trying to bounce outside since edge defenders squeezing hard will erase the perimeter lane.
