PA Boot Screen is a play-action screen out of Singleback Wing Flex 12 personnel that sells the boot fake to one side while the offensive line and backfield set up a screen for the running back on the opposite edge. It is designed as a blitz beater and pursuit killer, using the play-action fake to freeze linebackers and defensive ends before they can flow to the screen. The primary read progression is simple: the quarterback opens with the boot action to hold the edge defenders, then comes back immediately to the screen as the first and only real read once the fake sells.
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and alignment, if they are stacked tight to the box expecting run support, they are more likely to bite on the boot fake and vacate screen lanes. Identify if the defense is in man coverage with aggressive corner blitzes or nano blitz packages, since those defenders flying upfield are exactly what this screen exploits. Post-snap, key on the backside defensive end and any user-controlled rusher, if they crash hard toward the quarterback on the boot fake, the screen lane opens immediately. Watch for a spy or a linebacker who stays home and reads the quarterback's eyes, disciplined defenders like this can jump the screen route before the running back gets set. Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with linebackers trained to sit in short zones and read backfield action are the biggest threat to shut this play down, since they take away the boot throw and stay in position against the screen.
Call this on early downs or second and long when defenses are keying on the run or expecting a play-action shot down the field off the boot fake.
Watch for aggressive user pass rushers and green dot blitzers pre-snap, this play is built to make them pay for crashing hard off the edge.
Do not hot route the screen blockers, let the design work and just focus on your pump fake timing to sell the boot before resetting to throw the screen.
Pair this with PA Y-Cross and PA Fl Dive earlier in a drive so defenders start respecting the boot action, which sets up the screen as a change of pace once they start jumping the play-action pass.
Avoid calling this against zone-heavy defenses with disciplined linebackers who sit and read, since spy defenders and zone drops can sniff out the screen before it develops.
