Slot Fade Shot is a shot-play concept out of Singleback Wing Flex 12 personnel that isolates the slot receiver on a fade route while stacking additional vertical stems to clear out underneath zones. It is a man beater at its core, designed to put a cornerback in a trail position on a jump ball, but it also punishes single-high shells that leave the slot defender without deep help. The primary read progression starts with the slot fade for the back shoulder or jump ball opportunity, then works to any secondary vertical or crossing route if the deep shot is not there, before checking down to the flat or backfield outlet as a last resort.
Check the corner over the slot receiver pre-snap, if he is playing tight man press technique with no safety rotating over the top you have a green light for the fade Identify single-high looks like Cover 1 Man or Cover 3 Sky, these are the shells most vulnerable to the slot fade because the deep defender is occupied elsewhere Watch for two-high safety alignments like Cover 2 or Cover 4, these shut the window down fast since a safety can rotate over to help on the fade Post-snap, track any user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the intermediate zone, he can undercut secondary routes if the quarterback holds the ball too long Respect delayed blitz packages out of nickel or dime fronts, if the protection breaks down before the fade route stems vertically you need to be ready to throw early or take the checkdown
Use pre-snap motion or a quick alignment check to confirm whether the defense is showing man or zone before the snap, since this play lives and dies on winning one-on-one leverage
Look for single-high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3, these give the slot fade the room to work up the seam without immediate double coverage
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or drag if you see two-high safeties rotating down, this gives you a shorter completion window against zone drops
Save this call for third and medium to third and long or red zone fringe situations where a boundary jump ball is an acceptable risk-reward
