Breakdown

HB Toss Strong is the run-heavy staple out of Singleback Wing Flex, using 12 personnel to load the strong side with extra blockers before the toss hits the edge. The fullback and strong side TE lead the way, sealing the edge defender and linebacker flow while the offensive line reach blocks to create a running lane outside the tackle. This is a pure run play, not a pass or RPO, so the primary read is horizontal: identify whether the edge is sealed and whether the second level defender (usually the SAM or a flowing MIKE) is blocked before deciding to bounce outside or cut it up inside the lead blockers.

Defensive Reads

Watch the strong side defensive end and OLB depth before the snap, if they are crashing down hard or showing an outside contain blitz, this play struggles to get outside. Key the SAM linebacker flow, if he reads toss quickly and flies to the edge untouched, the fullback lead block will lose that matchup and the play dies in the backfield. This beats light boxes and defenses playing base zone coverage that commit extra defenders to pass drops rather than run support. It gets shut down by defenses stacking the box with eight defenders or user-controlled defenders who key the toss motion and shoot the gap before blockers can set the edge. Look for a hard edge set from the defensive end paired with a scraping linebacker, that combination forces the back to cut inside where fewer blockers are available.

Usage Tips

Use this against defenses showing light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since the extra blockers from 12 personnel need favorable numbers to spring the edge. Check the pre-snap alignment of the strong side end and OLB, if they are crashing hard inside or showing blitz, this play can get to the edge before flow arrives. Motion the fullback or use a hot route on the strong TE to adjust the point of attack if you see an overload on that side. Pair this with Counter Weak from the same set to keep defenders guessing on run direction, since both plays start with similar backfield action but attack opposite edges. Best called on first and second down in normal or run-heavy situational sets, and avoid it against heavy inside blitz looks where defenders can beat the pulling blockers to the spot.
