Y Stick out of Singleback F Wing Slot is a classic Stick concept built to attack zone coverage with quick, high percentage throws. The tight end runs the stick route to the flat area at a shallow depth, the outside receivers work curl and flat combos while the backside runs a quick out or flat route, creating a triangle read that stresses underneath defenders horizontally and vertically. This is a zone beater at its core, though the stick route also creates natural separation against man coverage due to the sit down break, and the primary read progression starts with the TE stick, then works to the flat, then to the curl if the middle of the field opens up.
Presnap, check safety depth and count the box, a two high shell with linebackers sitting in shallow zone drops signals Cover 2 or Cover 4, both of which the stick concept is designed to exploit underneath. Watch the flat defender, if a linebacker or nickel corner widens quickly to cover the flat route, the stick sitting behind him becomes the easy answer for the quarterback. Against Cover 3, key the curl to flat defender since he has to choose between the flat route and the stick route, and whichever he abandons is where the quarterback should go. User controlled defenders often try to jump the stick route since it is the most obvious read, so be ready to work through progression to the flat or curl if you see the user lurking underneath. Man coverage with no safety help over the top can be exposed by the curl route sitting down against zone leverage defenders, but tight man coverage with inside leverage on the TE can disrupt the timing of the stick route and shut down the primary read.
Use this play on third and short to third and medium situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 2 to protect against explosive plays.
Presnap, identify if the linebackers are showing blitz or sitting back in zone drops, since the stick route to the TE is the quickest answer against a blitz look.
Hot route the backside receiver into a drag or speed out if you see man coverage from a corner playing outside leverage, this gives you a built in man beater without changing the whole play concept.
Pair this play with HB Slip Screen or Bubble Screen earlier in a drive to bait linebackers into sitting on quick game reads, then come back to Y Stick once they start jumping the flat routes.
Combine this with TE Spot in your play calling sequence since both attack the same underneath zone areas but from different angles, forcing defenders to guess between stick and spot concepts.
