PA Counter Str is a play-action shot play out of Singleback F Wing Slot that sells inside zone or counter run action before the QB works a vertical passing concept. The play fakes a counter step to the strong side, drawing linebackers and safeties up before the QB rolls into or holds the pocket to attack downfield with routes designed to stretch the field vertically and horizontally. This is a man beater at its core, using the run fake to create a hesitation window against man defenders, with the primary read progression starting to the strong side deep or intermediate route, then working back to any underneath check down or crosser if the shell holds up top.
Pre snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells, single high indicates man coverage underneath which is exactly what this play is designed to exploit with its vertical route on the strong side. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the counter fake and step up into the run lane, the middle of the field opens up for the crosser or check down route. Post snap, key any user controlled defender dropping into a lurk spot in the intermediate zone, a smart user will sit on the crossing route and jump the QB's first read, so have your check down ready. Cover 3 with a fast flowing linebacker corps can shut this down quickly if the defense does not respect the run fake, since the extra underneath defender clogs the shallow crossing lane. Look for blitz indicators like linebackers creeping to the line or safeties rotating down before the snap, since this play needs time to develop and cannot survive a fast interior pressure package without a hot route adjustment.
Call this on early downs like first or second and short when the defense expects run based on personnel and formation tendencies, since 21 personnel with a fullback in the backfield naturally sells the counter fake harder.
Check the safety alignment pre snap, if both safeties are sitting at depth of 8 yards or deeper in a two high shell, the play action fake will not fully hold them and you should be ready to check to a quicker underneath option.
Use hot routes to convert the shallow crosser into a quick out or slant if you diagnose man coverage with no safety help over the top, this turns a shot play into a high percentage completion.
Pair this play in sequence with HB Power O or PA Power O earlier in a series so the defense keys hard on the counter run action, making the play fake in PA Counter Str far more effective at freezing linebackers.
Avoid calling this against known blitz-heavy defensive tendencies unless you have a hot route plan ready, since the play action fake delays your blockers getting set and leaves the QB exposed to edge pressure.
