TE Spot from Singleback F Wing Slot is a classic Spot Concept pass play built specifically to attack Cover 3 shells. The route combo stacks a flat route, a spot (hitch/curl sit at 5 yards), and a corner route on one side to create a triangle stretch that puts the curl-flat defender in conflict. Your primary read starts with the flat defender: if he widens with the flat route, hit the spot route sitting underneath; if he sinks under the spot, throw the flat immediately, with the corner route as your window-shot answer against a hard-squatting zone defender.
Watch the curl-flat defender at the snap since he is the conflict player this concept is designed to attack in Cover 3. If the defense shows two safeties deep pre-snap, expect the flat and spot routes to be taken away quickly, so lean on the corner route or check down to the underneath routes on the opposite side. Post-snap, track any user-controlled linebacker or safety flashing down into a lurk position over the spot route, since that is the most common way good defenders shut this play down. Zone blitzes with a five-man rush and a robber underneath can jump the spot route hard, so have a quick answer ready if you see extra defenders crowding the middle. Straight man coverage with press corners and no underneath help is the toughest matchup for this concept, so audible or hot route out of it when you diagnose Cover 1 or Cover 0 pre-snap.
Pre-snap, identify single-high safety alignment since this play is engineered as a Cover 3 Beater and loses efficiency against two-high shells with soft corners.
Use motion or a quick glance to the flat defender's depth before the snap to confirm he is playing hard zone drops rather than man leverage.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you diagnose man coverage, since the Spot concept alone is not your best man beater.
This play shines on second and medium or third and short, where the quick underneath completions to the spot or flat route pick up easy conversions without needing the corner route to fully develop.
