H Misdirection Str is a run play out of Singleback F Wing Slot with 21 personnel that uses a fake step to one side before handing off to the H back running the opposite direction. The offensive line and TE sell zone flow one way while the misdirection element pulls linebackers out of position, creating a running lane on the backside. This is a run play designed to attack overaggressive run fits, and the primary read progression starts with the backside cutback lane, then works to the frontside gap if defenders bite hard on the initial flow.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they are creeping downhill on flow fakes without hesitation this play will hit big on the cutback. Check safety alignment pre-snap, single high shells with linebackers flowing hard to the play side are the ideal matchup for this misdirection. Identify if the defense is running a nano blitz or edge pressure package, fast penetration off the snap can blow up the timing before the cutback develops. Post-snap, track whether the defense has a spy or a linebacker staying home on misdirection, disciplined defenders who do not bite on the flow will erase the backside lane. Against Cover 2 or Cover 3 zone shells with linebackers reading run first, this play beats slow-flowing defenses but struggles against gap-sound fronts like a 46 or heavy blitz look with contain defenders staying put.
Call this play when the defense shows heavy run blitz tendencies or when linebackers have been flowing fast to the ball on previous snaps.
Use pre-snap motion sparingly here since the misdirection itself is the deception, too much extra movement can tip your hand to a disciplined defense.
Pair this with HB Power O and HB Dive earlier in a drive so linebackers key on downhill flow, then hit them with H Misdirection Str to gash the backside.
Best used on early downs, first and second and ten or medium yardage situations where you have play calling freedom and defenses are not in pure pass shells.
If the defense is stacking the box with linebackers reading run keys immediately, mix in PA Fl Dive or PA Power O off the same look to keep them honest.
