HB Dive out of Singleback F Wing Slot is a downhill run play designed to attack the interior of the defensive line with a straight north-south blocking scheme. The offensive line fires off the ball with double teams on the defensive tackles while the fullback or extra blocker leads through the A-gap, and the primary read is the frontside A-gap with a quick bounce to the backside B-gap if the initial hole is clogged. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO element, built to punish light boxes and gain quick, low-risk yardage against overly aggressive fronts.
Pre-snap, identify the number of defenders in the box and check whether the middle linebacker is stacked directly over the center, since that alignment signals a strong interior run fit designed to stop HB Dive. Watch safety depth before the snap, a safety creeping down into the box or showing run support indicates Cover 3 or Cover 1 run support looks that can clog the A-gap. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles' initial step, if they are shooting gaps rather than reading, the play design intends to blow up the dive before the double team can seal it. This play struggles against interior run blitzes and mug looks from linebackers, since the extra rusher fills the A-gap before the lead blocker can get there. HB Dive beats light boxes, base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts without a run blitz called, and defenses playing off coverage that keep linebackers backpedaling instead of attacking downhill.
Check the defensive box count before the snap and only run HB Dive into 6 or fewer defenders in the box, since 7 plus in the box turns this into a losing matchup up front.
Use HB Dive on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest against your play-action shots from the same formation.
Pair HB Dive with PA Fl Dive and PA Power O since both plays share the same initial mesh point action, forcing linebackers to respect the run fake and freeze for a half second longer.
If the defense shows a stacked box or blitz look pre-snap, audible into Bubble Screen or HB Slip Screen to punish overpursuit rather than forcing the dive into a bad matchup.
Mix in HB Draw and HB Stretch from this same set to keep linebacker flow and run fits guessing, since all three hit different landmarks but start with similar footwork.
