Spacing out of Shotgun Wing Close Offset is a horizontal, timing-based zone beater built to stretch underneath defenders across the width of the field. The concept combines quick hitches, a shallow drag, and stick routes at varying depths so the quarterback can throw off the flow of zone defenders without needing to hold the ball. This is a classic zone beater rather than a man beater or RPO, and the primary read progression works sideline to middle: start with the boundary hitch or flat route, work through the stick or slot hitch, and finish on the drag crossing the field as the checkdown.
Read the flow of the linebackers immediately after the snap, if they widen or sink into passing lanes you are likely facing zone coverage that this play is designed to beat. Check the cornerbacks pre-snap, soft outside leverage or off coverage signals zone drops where the hitch and stick routes will sit in open windows. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in a shallow zone or spying the drag route, since a lurking user can jump the crossing route and bait a turnover. Against Cover 3, target the flat route or hitch on the side away from the deep third defender rotating late. This play struggles against aggressive man press or Cover 0 blitz packages, so if you see man coverage indicators like cornerbacks lined up tight with no safety help, be ready to hot route or check to a different concept from the set like RPO Glance Slant.
Use Spacing on third and short to medium situations where defenses are likely to sit in zone coverage like Cover 2 or Cover 3. Identify the coverage shell pre-snap by checking safety depth, two deep safeties usually means Cover 2 or Cover 4 zone drops that Spacing can exploit underneath. Hot route the outside receiver into a quick out if you see press man coverage, since the base concept is designed for zone and can get grabby at the line against man defenders. Pair this play with Stick from the same set to create a strong play-action or run-pass sequence, since both attack similar underneath zones but with different route depths, keeping linebackers honest. Sequence Spacing after running Inside Zone or Same Side Zone a few times to bait linebackers into run fits, then hit the drag or hitch in the void they vacate.
