Inside Zone out of Shotgun Wing Close Offset is a run play built on a zone blocking scheme where the offensive line steps in unison toward the play side, reading the defensive front and cutting the ball to whichever gap opens up. The wing tight end and offset back positioning give extra gap support at the point of attack, sealing off edge defenders and creating a natural cutback lane if the defense over pursues. Primary read progression for the ball carrier starts at the play side A gap, then bounces to the backside cutback lane if the frontside is clogged, making it effective against both light boxes and stacked fronts.
Identify base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts presnap since Inside Zone thrives against two gap fronts that create natural bend for the cutback. Watch linebacker depth and shade, if they are stacked tight to the line expect an early fill call so be ready to bounce outside instead of forcing it inside. User controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side call for an immediate cutback read, do not fight the flow of pursuit. Cover 1 and Cover 3 shells with an extra run support defender in the box shut this down quickly, so respect the safety rotation and check to a pass concept like Stick or Spot TE Seam if the box is loaded. Blitz packages that send an extra defender off the edge unblocked can blow this up before the mesh point, so know your protection numbers and adjust the fullback or TE to account for free rushers.
Check the defensive box count before the snap and only run this against six or fewer defenders in the box for a numbers advantage.
Use the wing tight end alignment to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety down, which tells you which side the cutback lane will be stronger on.
Pair this with PA Fork or RPO Glance Slant out of the same formation so the defense has to respect both the run action and the play action shot off identical presnap looks.
Against aggressive linebackers who crash downhill, hot route the fullback or wing TE to chip and release into the flat as a checkdown safety valve.
Run this on early downs to set up Same Side Zone as a complementary tag so linebackers cannot key run direction based on backfield action alone.
