RPO Glance Slant out of Shotgun Wing Close Offset pairs an inside zone run action with a quick slant and glance route combo attacking the middle of the field. The quarterback reads the play side linebacker or nickel defender before the snap and again immediately after the mesh point, handing off if the second level defender crashes downhill or pulling to throw the glance if that defender sits or widens. This is a true RPO that punishes light boxes and undisciplined linebacker flow, with the glance route serving as the primary answer against man coverage and the slant working as a natural zone beater underneath.
Watch the play side linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is sitting shallow near the line of scrimmage he is likely reading run and will bite on the zone action Check for a nickel or slot defender walked into the box, this signals man coverage on the slot receiver and makes the glance route the higher percentage throw Post-snap, track whether the linebacker flows with the run fake or stays home, quarterbacks should abort the run read entirely if that defender sits in the throwing lane Look for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow middle zone, a smart user will sit on the glance route and jump it, so have a checkdown or be ready to tuck and run if that lane is taken away Cover 4 and heavy zone blitz looks with an extra hook defender can shut this down since the underneath window gets clogged, favor the run read against those fronts instead of forcing the RPO throw
Identify the box count before the snap, if you see six or fewer defenders in the box this play is a green light to give the run read priority
Key the play side linebacker immediately at the snap, if he steps up or blitzes pull and throw the glance route in the vacated window
Use this against Cover 1 and Cover 3 shells where the underneath defenders have to respect run action, the glance route creates natural rub leverage against man coverage
Sprinkle this in on early downs after running Inside Zone or Same Side Zone from the same set so linebackers start cheating downhill, then punish them with the RPO throw
Pair this with HB Angle or Stick on 3rd and short to give yourself both a run heavy and pass heavy answer from the same personnel look without tipping your hand
