Same Side Zone is an outside zone run out of Shotgun Wing Close Offset that directs the offensive line and the wing tight end to flow and seal to the same side, creating a run lane on the play side edge. This is a run play designed to hit off tackle or bounce outside if the edge defender gets sealed, giving the ball carrier a stretch look with cutback potential if the backside pursuit overruns the play. The primary read progression starts with the play side defensive end and outside linebacker leverage, then the running back reads the flow of the offensive line to decide whether to press the hole, bounce it outside, or cut it back against the grain.
Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker alignment pre-snap since a wide nine technique or heavy edge crash can blow up the stretch before it develops. Key the middle linebacker depth and flow, if he sits and reads instead of flowing hard to the play side the cutback lane disappears. Look for safeties rotating down into the box pre-snap, an eight man front or run blitz look from a Cover 0 or Cover 1 shell will outnumber your blockers and stop this play cold. Post-snap, identify whether the backside pursuit is overrunning the play, which signals a cutback lane opening up behind the initial flow. Beware of a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the hole or crashing down hard off the snap, since a disciplined gap defender reading zone run can blow up the play before the back gets to the line.
Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into light fronts with six or fewer defenders in the box since the wing tight end is your extra blocker on the play side.
Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are more likely to sit in base personnel instead of loading up with extra defensive backs.
If the defense shows a hard crash or stacked edge to the play side, hot route the wing tight end to chip and release or bring the fullback across to adjust the blocking angle before the snap.
Pair this with Inside Zone from the same set to keep the defense honest on both interior and outside zone reads, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their fits.
Sequence this with RPO Glance Slant or PA Fork after establishing the zone run so the defense bites on run fits and opens up throwing lanes off the same formation look.
