Y Cross out of the Shotgun Wide 5wr set is built around the Y receiver running a deep crossing route from one side of the formation all the way across the field, working underneath deep safety help and over the middle linebackers. The backside typically features a dig or corner combo to hold safeties, while the frontside runs shorter option or hitch routes to occupy corners and clear the crosser's path. This is a man beater at its core, since the long horizontal path forces man defenders to fight through traffic and rub routes, but it also stresses zone defenders who have to sink and wall off the middle of the field. The primary read progression starts with the crosser working from the far side, then works back to the underneath option route or check down if the crosser is blanketed.
Pre-snap, check for a single high safety alignment, since that tells you the crosser will have a defined throwing lane before he has to work through the deep third defender. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, because shallow linebackers can undercut the crosser's path if they read quarterback eyes quickly and sit in the passing lane. This play struggles against a hard user controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, since that defender can jump the route before it fully develops. Look for man coverage with no safety help over the top, since that is the ideal look for the crosser to separate quickly across the field. Cover 3 zone with disciplined underneath defenders and a rat in the hole can shut this route down, so be ready to check down to the short option route if the middle gets clogged.
Read the middle of the field pre-snap to identify single high versus two high safety shells before deciding whether the crosser will have room to work underneath the deep safety.
Against man coverage, use hot routes to speed up the crosser's break if you are getting immediate pressure, since the route takes time to develop and needs a clean pocket.
Combine this play with Quick Slants or Stick from the same set to keep defenses honest on early downs, then dial up Y Cross on second and medium once the defense starts jumping quick game routes.
On third and long, pair Y Cross with Deep Divide or Four Verticals in your play calling sequence to force linebackers to choose between crashing down on the crosser or respecting vertical shots.
User the crossing receiver manually against zone heavy defenses to rip yards after the catch once he clears the linebacker level, since this route consistently creates YAC opportunities in the soft spot behind linebackers and in front of safeties.
