Double Post out of Shotgun Wide 5wr sends two receivers up the seams into stacked post routes designed to split the deep safeties in a two-high shell. This is a dropback passing concept, not play-action or an RPO, and it functions as a dedicated Cover 2 and Cover 4 beater by attacking the middle of the field where safeties have to choose which post to help on. The primary read progression starts with the near post breaking toward the safety who is shading over the top, then works to the second post crossing behind him, with underneath outlets available if both posts are capped.
Watch for two safeties aligned at depth pre-snap, that is your green light since Cover 2 and Cover 4 leave a natural throwing lane between the posts. If the defense shows a single high safety or rotates to Cover 3 after the snap, both posts run into a crowded middle of the field and the throw becomes risky. Key the flow of the safeties as the posts break, if one safety bails hard to the sideline it usually means the defense is playing quarters and leaving the honesty read to the other post. Beware of user-controlled safeties sitting in a deep hole or lurking underneath the post break, this is the primary defensive counter to this concept. Man coverage with press corners can jump the post stems early, so if you see man alignment pre-snap consider hot routing to a quicker breaking route instead of forcing the post read.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, this play is built to punish two deep safeties who cannot cover both posts at once.
If you see a single high safety rotate down, be ready to hot route one of the posts into a corner or dig to avoid throwing into a robbed middle of the field.
Use this on early downs or third and medium when defenders are more likely to sit in Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells rather than bring pressure.
Pair this call with Four Verticals or Deep Divide earlier in a drive so the defense respects the deep middle, then come back to Double Post to hit the window once safeties start cheating.
Manually control the far post receiver after the snap so you can adjust his depth and win the rep against a lurking safety while the AI works the near post read.
