Deep Choice Drag out of Shotgun Wide 5wr is a five wide route concept built around a choice route on one side and a drag route working the underneath middle of the field, giving the quarterback a high low read that stresses both zone and man coverage. The choice receiver reads the leverage of the defender and breaks in, out, or sits down, making this an effective man beater when the corner plays off or with inside leverage, while the drag serves as the zone beater by settling into soft spots between linebackers. Primary progression starts with the choice route to identify the coverage sinker, then works to the drag if that read is not open, and finally checks down to the underneath option before scrambling drills come into play.
Identify single high safety shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1 pre-snap, since the choice route can settle into the intermediate void against zone or win with a quick out against off man corners. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, because shallow linebacker drops signal underneath zone coverage that will make the drag route tighter and force the quarterback to layer the throw over the second level. Beware two high safety shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4 with a hard flat corner, since this can squeeze the drag route and force a checkdown read instead of an explosive gain. Look for user controlled defenders spying the drag route or sitting in a lurk technique in the middle of the field, as this is the primary way defenses take away the easy completion on this concept. Against blitz heavy calls with man coverage behind it, trust the choice route to win quickly since the drag may not have time to develop before pressure arrives, so the quarterback should be ready to get the ball out in under two seconds.
Motion one of the outside receivers pre-snap to confirm man versus zone before the snap, since a defender following the motion man tells you to trust the choice route against man leverage.
Use this play on second and medium to third and short situations where the drag can pick up the sticks quickly against zone drops or where the choice route can win one on one against off coverage.
Hot route the drag receiver to a slant if you see aggressive underneath zone rotation, since this keeps the route in front of him and prevents a lurking linebacker from undercutting the throw.
Pair this play with All Curl or Quick Slants earlier in a drive to condition the defense to expect quick game, then hit Deep Choice Drag as a changeup once corners start jumping short routes.
Combine with QB Draw or RPO Bubble QB Draw in your play calling script so defenses respect the run threat from this formation and stay honest instead of dropping extra defenders into coverage.
