WR Screens out of Shotgun Wide 5wr is a quick-hitting perimeter screen designed to get the ball out to a bubble or wide receiver with blockers set up in front of him. The offensive line and adjacent receivers release to wall off pursuit while the target receiver sits behind the line of scrimmage waiting for the throw, making this a classic blitz beater and zone beater against aggressive defensive calls. The primary read is simply throwing to the screen side that shows the most green grass, so pick whichever receiver has the better blocking numbers or space before the snap and get the ball out immediately after the catch to let your blockers work.
Watch for corners playing hard outside leverage or squatting at the line, this is a strong sign the user knows the screen is coming and will jump the route. Key on linebacker depth before the snap, if they are sitting shallow or crashing toward the screen side immediately after the snap, they have likely diagnosed the play from film or tendencies. Check for edge defenders or slot corners setting containment rather than rushing the passer, that alignment usually signals the defense is playing screen recognition and will sit and wait. This play struggles against disciplined zone defenses with linebackers reading run/pass keys, since they can react and fill quickly without overcommitting to the rush. It thrives against man coverage with no underneath help and against all out blitz calls, since the rushers are removed from the screen lane and blockers get a clean release.
Pre-snap, identify which side of the field has fewer defenders in the box or a corner playing off, since that side will have a numbers advantage for blockers to work with.
This play punishes user blitzes and aggressive nano blitz packages because the ball comes out before the rush can get home, so call it on early downs when you suspect the defense is sending extra pressure.
Use your right stick or WR icon to manually steer the ball carrier behind the blocks instead of running straight upfield, patience here creates more yards than speed.
Pair this with All Curl or Quick Slants in the same set to keep the defense guessing between a quick screen and a quick timing throw, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
Avoid calling this into a defense that has shown heavy inside zone coverage rotation toward the screen side, since extra defenders sitting flat will blow it up before the blockers get set.
