HB Sweep out of Shotgun Tight Slot Flip is a pure run play that sends the HB laterally toward the edge before turning upfield, with the offensive line flowing in unison to reach block and seal the point of attack. The diagram shows the running back taking a lateral path away from the play call arrow before cutting north, relying on the play side tackle and TE to pull or reach outside while the backside blocks stay flat to prevent backdoor pursuit. This is a zone beater designed to outrun flow to the sideline, and the primary read progression starts with the edge defender's leverage before working inside to the cutback lane if the perimeter is sealed.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker leverage at the snap, if they crash down hard they can blow up the pulling blockers before the sweep develops. This run struggles against fast flow 4-3 fronts and Cover 3 Sky looks where the strong safety is already stacked near the box, since extra run support arrives before the blocking wall forms. It beats light boxes out of Cover 1 or Cover 3 with the safety rotated deep, since the alley defender has to run a longer distance to string the play out. Key the safety pre-snap alignment, if the strong safety is walked up near the line of scrimmage the user should expect quick outside support and should look to bounce the run back inside. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled linebacker flying to the sideline in pursuit, if he overruns the play the cutback lane inside the sweep blocking becomes the higher value read.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs against light boxes when the defense shows six or fewer in the box pre-snap, since sweeps need numbers advantage on the perimeter to hit big.
Check the flow of the linebackers before the snap, if you see the Mike and Will cheat toward the strength you called the sweep away from, bounce it back the other way with a quick flip or audible.
Pair this with Inside Zone in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both an edge-stretching run and an interior gap run out of the same formation and personnel look.
Use HB Sweep on early downs (first and second and short to medium) since the lateral development takes longer to hit than a downhill run and is vulnerable to negative plays against fast-flowing fronts.
Sequence it with HB Draw and PA Read from this set so defenders keying run fits get punished by misdirection later in the drive.
