Mtn Z Choice out of Shotgun Tight Slot Flip is a pass play built around a choice route from the slot receiver combined with two deep outs on the backside and boundary. Pre-snap motion crosses the formation, and the near receiver runs a quick option route with a stem to the outside, sitting or breaking based on the defender's leverage, while the two outside receivers push vertically before breaking hard to the sideline on deep out routes. The primary read starts with the choice route working underneath against man coverage, then progresses to the deep out on the boundary if the defense sits soft or plays zone.
Defensive Reads
Check the corner over the choice route pre-snap, since tight man coverage with no help over the top is the biggest tell that the choice route will win immediately. Watch the safety rotation after the motion, because a hard rotation to the choice side signals zone coverage and tells you to progress to the deep out sooner. Key the flat defender on the boundary out route, since a defender sitting flat footed in that zone will jump the route and force a checkdown. Man coverage with no safety help over the choice route gets exposed almost every time, while a two high shell that rotates late to the motion side is the best defensive answer. Watch for a linebacker blitz off the edge, since the choice route's shallow depth gives the quarterback a quick answer against pressure looks.

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, since the motion defender's reaction reveals the coverage shell immediately.
Attack this play against man coverage first, letting the choice route read the defender's hip and break opposite for an easy completion underneath.
Hot route the backside deep out into a shorter hitch or slant if you see a Cover 2 shell rolling hard to the choice side, since the corner can sink into that zone.
Run this on early downs or third and short, since the choice route gives a built in answer against blitz or man leverage and keeps the chains moving.
