Inside Zone from Shotgun Tight Slot Flip is a straightforward zone run play with the RB aligned next to the QB, showing a downhill run path attacking the A gap before bending based on the flow of the offensive line. The blocking scheme has the line stepping in unison to the play side, sealing running lanes and reading the first level defender to combo up to linebackers, with the two outside receivers running vertical stems that occupy corners and safeties without being the primary read. This is a run play, not a play-action or RPO look, and the primary read progression is the RB reading the play side double team, working from the A gap to the B gap based on how the defensive line flows.
Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if they are stacked tight to the line in run support this play will struggle to find a crease. Identify single high versus two high safety shells, single high alignments often mean an extra run defender in the box which hurts Inside Zone's blocking numbers. Post-snap, key the play side defensive tackle and see if he is getting pushed off the ball by the combo block, if he holds his ground the cutback lane becomes the better path. User-controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side call for an immediate cutback read since Inside Zone's design allows the RB to bend backside against overpursuit. Blitzes that bring extra defenders through the A or B gap can blow this play up quickly, so check for stacked inside linebackers or a nickel blitz package before snapping.
Check the defensive front pre-snap and identify where the extra run defender is stacked because Inside Zone hits hardest against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit.
Use the flip motion in Tight Slot Flip to force the defense to declare their strength shift, then read whether the linebackers adjust before the snap.
Hot route the outside receivers into quick hitches or blocks if you are facing a run blitz look, since they are not part of the primary run read and their routes only matter in play-action shells off this same formation.
Pair this play with HB Draw and PA Read out of the same set so linebackers cannot sit on run fits without opening themselves up to a delayed run or a play-action shot.
Run this on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts rather than sub packages built to stop the pass.
