Snag Z Spot is a classic Snag concept run from Shotgun Split WR Backfield with 11 personnel, and the diagram confirms the three-level stretch to the closed side. The outside WR (yellow) runs a corner route up the sideline, the TE (yellow) sits down in the flat area on a quick spot route, and the inside slot (yellow) runs a corner-to-flat pivot that settles underneath, while the backfield player (red) releases outside for a wide flat route away from the concept. The primary read progression starts with the corner route to clear the deep third, then works down to the spot/hook route in the middle, and finishes with the underneath flat as the checkdown, making this a strong Cover 3 beater.
Defensive Reads
Read the deep third defenders before the snap, since this play is designed to attack Cover 3 by putting three receivers on different levels of the same zone. Watch for a user-controlled safety sitting over the top of the corner route, since that indicates the defense is selling out to stop the deep shot and the spot route underneath should be open. Key the flat defender on the play side, if he widens with the corner route the underneath spot sitting down becomes the easy throw. Against man coverage, look for natural picks created by the crossing nature of the spot and corner routes, which can cause defenders to lose their assignments. Be wary of Cover 4 or match zone shells where the corner is sunk into the corner route landing spot, as this can bait the quarterback into a tight window throw.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check for single-high safety alignment since this concept is built to attack Cover 3 by flooding one side of the field with three distinct levels.
If the corner sits deep and outside on the receiver running the corner route, hot route him to a quicker breaking pattern to avoid getting jumped by a lurking safety.
Use this on second or third and medium situations where the defense is more likely to sit in zone shells rather than blitz.
Pair this with Verts WR Seam from the same set to punish defenses that start cheating a linebacker into the passing lanes of the spot route.
Combine with Dig WR Option on early downs to keep linebackers honest before hitting them with the Snag concept later in a series.
