Redzone Corner out of Shotgun Split WR Backfield lines up with two receivers stacked to the left of the formation and a backfield receiver split to the right, giving a 3x1-style look with a bunch of routes over the middle. The backside X runs a deep corner route to the pylon while the inside receiver clears out on a deep in/dig crossing route, and the two receivers on the strongside stack run a mini-mesh with one sitting on a short out and the other working a pivot back to the flat, while the backfield back releases on a wheel route up the sideline. This is a man beater by design, using the corner and crosser combo to create natural rub separation against man coverage, with the primary read starting on the corner route to the pylon before working down to the crosser and finally the backside wheel if the defense jumps the deep shots.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage with a corner playing tight outside technique is the biggest tell that the corner route will win, especially in the redzone with the sideline acting as an extra defender. Watch the safety depth before the snap, a single high safety shaded to the strongside can jump the corner route and turn it into a pick six if the quarterback stares it down. Zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with a flat defender sitting underneath the corner route will squeeze the throwing window, so the crosser becomes the better answer against those looks. If the linebackers show blitz with the mike stepping up pre-snap, expect a hot underneath throw to be necessary since the protection may not hold up long enough for the corner route to develop. User-controlled defenders sitting in the deep third or robbing the crosser are the key post-snap indicator to abandon the primary read and check down to the backfield wheel route instead.
Usage Tips
Use this in the redzone or inside the 20 where the corner route to the pylon becomes a high value throw with limited field to defend.
Pre-snap, check if the corner is playing outside shade on the X receiver, since that alignment signals man coverage and opens the corner route for a back shoulder throw.
If the safety rotates over the top pre-snap, hot route the corner route down to a fade stop or bail to the crosser underneath since the top will be capped.
Combine this with Verts WR Seam earlier in the drive to condition the defense to bite on vertical shots, then come back with Redzone Corner to hit the same corner route against a defense sitting on shorter zone drops.
Pair with Snag Z Spot in your play-calling sequence since both attack similar landmarks but Snag beats zone while Corner beats man, giving you a full answer regardless of the shell shown.
